Workshop on
Human Trafficking, International Crime and National Security:
A Human Rights Perspective
February 3-4, 2012, Goettingen, Germany
We invite submissions for a workshop on human trafficking, international crime and national security with a particular focus on human rights, to be held in Goettingen, Germany, on February 3-4, 2012. As part of the European Commission’s Project on Indexing Trafficking in Human Beings, this workshop brings together economists, political scientists, and other scholars, as well as policy makers to address emerging problems of human trafficking and transnational crimes.

Submission of Papers
Empirical, theoretical and policy-oriented papers on the topics are welcome. Please submit full papers to scho@uni-goettingen.de. The deadline for submission is November 30th, 2011. Decisions will be made by December 31th, 2011.
Workshop Format, Attendance, Registration and Accommodation
Presenters of accepted papers are expected to attend the entire workshop. The number of presenters will be limited to about 30. Travel expenses will be reimbursed and accommodation will be provided for presenters of accepted papers. There is no registration fee.

The ASN Convention, the most attended international and inter-disciplinary scholarly gathering of its kind, welcomes proposals on a wide range of topics related to nationalism, ethnicity, ethnic conflict and national identity in Central Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, and Central Eurasia (including Central Asia, the Caucasus, Turkey, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq).

The North American Congress on Latin America, an independent non-profit established in 1966, is currently seeking candidates for internship positions for the Fall/Winter of 2011. Interns will assist staff in the production of our award-winning magazine, NACLA Report on the Americas, as well as with programs, events, and development. While interns are unpaid, course credit can be arranged. All positions will start as soon as possible, and can be arranged for one or two semesters.
1. Social Media Interns: Assist editorial and administrative staff in doing more social media outreach to relevant publications, organizations and bloggers. Tasks include: posting daily updates of NACLA articles, blogs and events; driving more traffic to the NACLA website; recruiting more followers for NACLA on Facebook, Twitter, Google +, and other social media platforms; monitoring and responding to web comments; posting comments on other relevant sites to encourage more communication; assisting in developing an overall web marketing strategy for NACLA’s Report and archive. 2. Editorial Intern Description: Assist editors in producing NACLA Report on the Americas, the most widely read English-language magazine on Latin America. Tasks include generating story ideas, general research, photo research, proofreading, and fact-checking, as well as administrative work, like handling author communication and helping to build and maintain a database of authors. Graduate students who use this internship to fulfill academic degree requirements are preferred. Time commitment is at least two days a week (or more, depending on degree requirement). Qualifications: Background in Latin America and the Caribbean or training in Latin American and Caribbean studies. Ability to write well and pay attention to detail is essential. Basic computer skills (Mac) required. Knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese helpful. Familiarity with NACLA Report on the Americas a definite plus. The Office of the Associate Provost for Academic Programs is pleased to announce a modest amount of funding available to support graduate student travel to disciplinary conferences to present papers or posters. Funds will be allocated through a competitive application process. Applications for fall and for spring/summer conferences will be considered separately. Applications and guidelines will be available in department offices and through graduate deputies.

Awards:
1. Funding of up to $250 may be awarded to reimburse travel and/or registration costs for conference attendance to present a paper, poster, or creative project; 2. Conference travel funds are intended to subsidize, not cover all the costs of, conference attendance for presenters.
Qualifications: to qualify to receive conference travel funds, applicants must:
1. Be presenting a paper, poster, or creative production at a disciplinary conference; 2. Be a matriculated graduate student at Brooklyn College, registered for courses in the semester s/he applies; 3. Have completed a minimum of 6 graduate credits at Brooklyn College or document undergraduate research related to the conference topic; 4. Have a cumulative graduate GPA of at least 3.5.
Process: applicants should submit a *complete application packet to the Office of the Association Provost for Academic Programs (3208 Boylan) by the deadline, including:
1. Completed application form;
2. Letter of acceptance from the conference or panel selection committee; 3. A letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor or graduate deputy; 4. A preliminary budget, including projected expenses for travel, lodging, and conference registration;
*Applications incomplete at the deadline, for any reason, will not be considered.
Successful applicants must present receipts for allowable expenditures up to the amount of the award within 2 weeks of conference travel to receive reimbursement.
Deadlines:
1. The deadline to apply for funds for fall 2011 conference attendance is September 27, 2011. Announcement of awards will be made by September 29, 2011.
2. The deadline to apply for funds for spring 2012 conferences is December 16, 2011. Announcement of awards will be made by December 20.
